The Natural Tunnel State Park hosts a stunning view of
limestone formation called the "eighth wonder of the world" by William
Jennings Bryan. High Knob Mountain’s observation tower offers a
panoramic view of five states: Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and North
Carolina and Tennessee. Rare plants and aquatic organisms, unusual ferns,
wildflowers, soft-shell turtles all thrive in the mineral-rich soil and
clear, mountain waters at Pinnacle Natural Area Preserve. Enjoy the
challenge of rafting on the Russell Fork River through Breaks
Interstate Park-the "Grand Canyon of the South". For hikers, take the
Daniel Boone Heritage Trail to the Wilderness Road State Park. Then
continue to Cumberland Gap Historical Park, which straddles the Virginia,
Tennessee and Kentucky .
The Blue Ridge Highlands, the birthplace of country music at the
Alliance Museum in Bristol, showcases countless museums throughout the
area commemorating the rich cultural heritage of a proud mountain people.
The Blue Ridge Parkway continues through this part of Virginia. Hike
through the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. The extensive
facilities include hiking, biking and horseback riding trails . The Blue
Ridge Highlands also features excellent hunting, fishing and golfing.
On the Blue Ridge Parkway, Mabry's Mill and pioneer exhibits provide
an authentic glimpse into the legacy of the mountain people. The Barter
Theatre in Abingdon kept spirits high during the Great Depression—by
allowing patrons to barter local products for theatre tickets—and
continues to entertain audiences today with comedies, musicals and dramas.
